The growth of man began with the discovery of fire and methods of applying it for the betterment of his life. From the age of fire to the current hydrocarbon age, mans journey through time has steadily improved his quality of life. The 20th century has seen the birth of the transistor and the circuit. The transistor and the circuit revolutionized the electronics industry. This gave birth to the ancestor of the computer as we know it today. Things are getting smaller and faster with each progressing day.
The transistor was invented about 60 years ago. The transistor revolutionized electronics back then. The semiconductor diode and the transistor were later integrated to create Integrated Circuits (IC). Integrated circuits are now found in most of the electronic devices produced today. Integrated circuits are complex circuits with multiple semiconductor chips placed in a plastic holder and connected with very fine wires. The IC is provided with pins to enable connections with circuit boards. ICs range from SSI (small scale integration) with up to 100 electronic components per chip to ULSI (ultra large scale integration) with more than 1 million electronic components per chip.
The term computer originally meant a person performing calculations with a calculating device. The computer has gone from huge machines to today's laptops and web books. The IC has enabled this miniaturization of computers. Believe it or not the average calculator today has more computing power than the computers used to send the Apollo 11 to the moon. Computers are getting smaller as well as faster. First came the personal computer. Then came the laptop. Now you get tablet computers which are computers in the form of a flat tablet. The screens are touched enabled and all the input is given through the screen.
Cell phone technology is an extension of radio technology. The mobile radio technology is primarily used by the armed forces. The mobile radio is bulky and was never considered for civilian use. The first real mobile phone was developed in the 1950s. It consisted of a handset with an analogue dial, an antenna and a battery pack. The car phone was the next generation in cell phone technology. The first real mobile phone was the Motorola DnyaTAC 8000X. This is considered the first generation (1G) cell phones. The second generation (2G) arrived in the 1990s and the cell phone market exploded. As the use of cell phones grew the demand for data services also grew and the 2G technology couldn't keep up. So was born the 3G. This is the technology we are using today.
Office Xerox machines, printers and projectors are also being miniaturized. The photocopying machines of the 1960s produced grainy black and white copies and took up an enormous amount of space. Today's photocopying and printing machines are integrated into one machine, saving space. Projectors are an integral part of the office. Projectors used to be big and needed a room to it. The advent of digital projectors miniaturized the projectors enough that it can be carried around in a bag. The next generation laser projectors are much smaller. Small enough to fit in your pocket.
