Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Facilitates Faster Recovery

As the name suggests, minimally invasive spine surgery is spine surgery done using small incisions

, with the help of endoscopic tools like devices and cameras to view the internal parts of the body. Here, only some sections of the spine like the thoracic (chest) and lumbar (lower back) regions are exposed to facilitate the use of minimally invasive technology to carry out the surgery.

The reason these types of surgery were conceptualized was to effectively treat spinal disc disorders with minimum injury to related muscles. This in turn aids with rapid recovery from the surgery, which is much better than the prolonged recovery time associated with traditional spine surgery.

Thirdly, this type of spinal dissection also leads to the loss of nerve stimulation of muscles, and its subsequent wasting away. This can lead to a permanent weakness of back muscles which can be symptomatic and can also limit the patients function, especially in those people who do lots of physical work.

With so much of muscle injury associated with spine surgery, there was clearly a need for development of less invasive spine surgical techniques. With the help of minimally invasive spine surgery the patient experiences various advantages including:

Reduced use of postoperative pain relief medications and thus, relief from its side effects.

Reduced hospital stay and quicker recovery to return to daily activities
