Minimally Invasive Surgery
This type of surgery involves procedures which are performed involving small incisions
which are made into the body or body cavity with two main objectives:
*Minimize damage/scarring to tissues
*Achieve the same or even better results as if performed by open or an invasive surgery
During a minimally invasive procedure, a surgeon makes more than a few tiny incisions in the skin only a few millimeters deep. An elongated, slender tube with a mini camera attached at the ending (called an endoscope) is passed through one of the incisions. Tubes linked with the small instruments are passed through the other openings.
Images from the endoscope are projected onto the screen so that surgeons can get a clear (and magnified) view of the surgical site.
Special instruments are required, comprising of fiber optics, camera etc.
These kinds of procedures offer many advantages over the conventional open surgeries like:
*a short hospital stay
*minimum blood loss
*swift procedure
*minimal scarring
*negligible infection
*immediate recovery
*very less pain
At the same time, there are a few disadvantages too, like
*It requires the use of a very special equipment
*Surgeons need extensive specialized training
*The equipment is expensive
Patient characteristics
Not every patient will be eligible for minimally invasive procedures. For instance, high body mass index, preceding abdominal surgery leading to adhesions or other complex medical conditions may have an effect on the decision on whether to proceed in the direction of more invasive surgery or not.
