Minute Repeater - Wonderful Masterpiece In Watch-marking

Do you know what a minute repeater is? No! Now let me tell you something about the Minute Repeater

. A minute repeater is also called a repeater watch, with three different sound of repeating, which could distinguish the time between "hour", "moment", "minute". It's really a skillful application of the acoustic and dynamic combination.

A Minute Repeater would be able to inform you of the time with an electronic tone. It is an acoustical masterpiece and one of the most significant complications in the history of watch-making. A minute repeater watch contains a tremendously complex mechanism whose intricate operations translate the time into a series of carefully tuned strikes, which indicate the current time of day at any moment that the repeater mechanism is activated. Once initiated, the Minute Repeater peals the hour, quarter hour and individual minute, each interval distinguished by its own. That means it chimes on the hour, quarter hour and minute on demand.

If you want to know what time is it now, you just need to pork up the watch's handle, and then it will produce a musical sound. As it is a minute repeater, the first time was telling you the exact hour, and the second time was telling the moment, the third one was telling the minute. The sound produced by the minute repeater is beautiful and melodious. And its tone was also very clear that would enable people to identify the hour, moment, minute easily. These watches have two different gongs inside: one to strike the hours, another, higher in pitch, for the minutes, while both in rapid low-high sequence indicate the quarters. Each gong sound has a hammer strike and a bell-like tone which gradually decays. The overall sound sequence has four more components: the regular tick, the initial sound of winding the repeater mechanism, a whirring from the chime regulator and in some, and a click at the sequence end. These elements can all be seen in the picture below. So now you can see that why it could produce such beautiful sounds.

The 17th-century repeater was an invention from necessity as people could not see the watch clearly without light in the dark but waiting for the chimes. In contrast to broadcasting clocks, one's relationship with a repeater is quite different and strictly personal; the time is told more precisely and on demand. Although the primary need has gone, there is no doubt that adding this complication to a watch is a significant engineering feat. But because it is a watch and therefore smaller, the sound that results is different in both scale and quality to that of a striking clock. The complication of its making and its collection value has made it very expensive. It's really a wonderful masterpiece in the watch-making.
