The combination of having all day to throw, and Memphis not covering any one in the secondary, led to a lopsided win. Chris Relf threw the first TD for 55 yards down the right sideline after a defender fell. Then Tyler Russell threw four TD passes of 20,25 27, and 52 yards. It was like watching a scrimmage. Where were the safeties? The other score was a 51 yard run right up the gut by Vick Ballard who was untouched. Memphis was pathetic on defense which was one of their problems from last year. Mississippi amassed 569 yards of offense. Tyler Russell appears to be the more polished passer going threw his progressions when he had time finding the open man. Relf throws a nice ball but stares at his receiver and had one picked off. He is a much better runner.
Mississippi States defense looked great putting pressure on the QB and stuffing the run. Memphis struggled to get a first down and didnt convert on a 3rd down till well into the game and finished just 2 for 15. Mississippi State held Memphis to 9 first downs in total and most of that was in a late drive where the bulldogs let up. Memphis is in for a long season. There is not much else to say about this game because it was so one sided.
Important notesMSU looks like there offense converted into a more balanced attack from last year where they were predominantly run. Defense attacks on every play and blitzes 2 or more people on every third down.
