Mistakes and the Fallen Spoon
THE SPOON STORY
THE SPOON STORY
BY JOHN PARKER
I heard a powerful story once that showed me how mistakes can be quite
valuable and even life-saving. I think it was on late Paul Harvey's news
program. I call it, "The Spoon Story" and it went something like this.
An elderly woman who lived alone was in her kitchen and had just finished
pouring herself some coffee. She added creamer and then picked up a spoon to
scoop some sugar and stir it in to her cup.
But as she brought the spoonful of sugar to the cup it rolled out of her hand
and clattered onto the kitchen floor. Shaking her head in self-reproach and
scolding herself for making such a clumsy, messy, mistake she bent down to
pick up the spoon.
Now her kitchen counter was L-shaped so when she bent down it covered her
from the left side. This is what saved her life.
Unbeknownst to her the water heater at the left end of her house had sprung a
gas leak. Over a short time the gas had compressed in one of the rooms
before it was ignited by some spark. The compacted gas became a deadly bomb
that blew the house up from one end to the other.
Thankfully our dear lady had made her clumsy, messy mistake! Yes, the
explosion occurred just as she bent down to pick up the spoon. Since she was
behind the counter all of the flying debris blew right over her head and she
came out unscathed.
Her mistake that saved her life. If she been less clumsy she would have been
injured, or even killed, as she stood there all nice and neat.
"Oh blessed mistake! Oh wonderful clumsiness!" She could have exclaimed
the rest of her days.
I can't prove this but I think there's some great truth in this story. I
believe some of our worst mistakes, our most embarrassing moments, our
deepest regrets may be the very things that have actually saved our lives.
I've talked with folks who have deep regrets about their lives and the
choices they've made. They blame themselves for their foolish and stupid
mistakes and how different life might have been without them.
That's when I like to tell them "The Spoon Story." And they get it
too. Without the mistakes they like the spoon lady might be dead now!
So whatever spoons you've dropped know that the Lord can and will take your
mistakes and turn them into "a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of
gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of
despair." (Isaiah 61:3, NIV)
As you trust him past your mistakes your life shall be saved through his life
in you!
"But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this
all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. " (2 Corinthians 4:7,
NIV)
"But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made
perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my
weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. " (2 Corinthians 12:9,
NIV)
