Mixed Media Art And Assemblage Art
When it comes to visual art, mixed media is any piece of artwork where more than one medium has been used on the same piece
. Mixed media refers to works that combine traditional and distinct visual media. Mixed media art for example, could be a collage of sketches in charcoal, ink and paint. Assemblage art is considered a process whereby 3 dimensions of composition are created by using found objects. One famous artist in the 50s, Jean Dubuffet, made collages using butterfly wings called Assemblages dEmpreintes. Picasso and Duchamp however, had been using found objects for years prior, and had created assemblage art. The earliest found female artist that created assemblage art was Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven.
In the early 60s, The Art of Assemblage could be found at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, that showcased such artists as Duchamp, Picasso, Braque, Schwitters and even Dubuffet.
When it comes to mixed media, it is said that it is very important to choose the layers and their makeup carefully to ensure each layer has enough time to dry before the next is applied to keep the integrity of the piece. The effects achieved by using mixed media art can be astounding, as found in a piece entitled Arc Angel by Jim McNitt. This mixed media art is made of oil, acrylic and pigmented inks on a canvas that used traditional oil painting techniques along with new modern digital image editing software. Artists such as Christian Boltanski, Roberta Jenkins, Jane Frank, Mateo Romero and Annette Messager are all mixed media artists.
With the use of the digital age, digital mixed media art is becoming more and more popular with artists. Such artists as Jason Mecier offer mixed media art that is centered on specific objects, in his case, celebrities. Meceirs art is focused on using discarded materials that the specific celebritys have left, and he uses them along with panels or canvas as well as digital media to be able to create a likeness of the celebrity. One in particular is a piece entitled Elvira, in which he has captured the Mistress of the Dark using mixed media art pieces on a panel to create her likeness from the waist up. Buttons, beads, lipsticks, lips with fangs: all pieces found within this exhilarating piece of transcendental likenesses. Inks, comics and makeup sold by the Mistress of the Dark are all incorporated into the piece to create a most unique and attractive mixed media art piece.
Assemblage art using three dimensional compositions is becoming more popular. One famous piece by Robert Rauschenberg entitled Canyon, was created in 1959. Made of oil, housepaints, paper, pencils, fabric and metal as well as buttons and nails, cardboard and photos with wood including paint tubes and string on canvas, this is one piece of art that uses a little bit of everything assembled into one fantastic 3-D experience.
Assemblage art and mixed media art are both making a large comeback with new artists, and those trying to become more eco friendly. With more people being aware of the eco status of our world, it makes sense more people would turn to using the fabrics of our lives that are no longer being used.
