Mlb Tickets - 2010 Was Filled With Surprising Pitchers
It's difficult to argue with the press that stud pitchers like Roy Halladay
, Adam Wainwright and Felix Hernandez have gotten, but the league is filled with other pitchers that have had great seasons without the fanfare. Here is a look at some of the quality seasons that have gone mostly overlooked.
Billy Wagner, Closer, Atlanta Braves:
Left for dead a couple seasons back after having to come back from major arm surgery, Wagner has been much better than expected in 2010. With 35 saves, a 1.43 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP, Wagner has been a rock at the end of the Braves' bullpen, allowing them to stay in the National League East hunt all season long.
Jered Weaver, Starter, Los Angeles Angels:
For a disappointing Angels team this season, Weaver has been one of their lone bright spots. Though his record isn't spectacular, his 2.99 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 220 strikeouts are among the league leaders in the A.L. If he put together that type of season for a better team, Weaver would be getting some Cy Young buzz.
Cole Hamels, Starter, Philadelphia Phillies:
Hamels was frustrating for much of the season, but those who stuck with him were surely rewarded down the stretch. Hamels has now won his last five starts and has pushed his ERA below 3.00. With Hamels pulling it together, the Phillies have gone from the team on the outside of the playoffs looking in to the stalwart of the National League.
Roy Oswalt, Starter, Philadelphia Phillies:
Oswalt is having a much better season than people realize. Part of his year was lost with the Astros but Oswalt has gotten even better since being traded to the Phillies. Oswalt once again ate up innings in 2010 and hasn't lost a single start since the end of July. With a 2.80 ERA and one of the best WHIPs in the entire league, it's a shame Oswalt is only now getting to .500 as a starting pitcher. Usually those are the types of numbers that win plenty of games and sell MLB tickets by the handful.
Brett Myers, Starter, Houston Astros:
The most underrated starter of 2010. Despite playing for one of the worst teams in the league, Myers has put together a 13-7 record due to his exceptional 2.76 ERA. Myers doesn't blow many people away but he's been steady all season long and was drafted very late in most fantasy leagues. Myers also owns one of the most ridiculous stats of the year. In 31 starts this season, Myers has pitched at least six innings in each and every one.
Trevor Cahill, Starter, Oakland A's:
Don't feel bad if you didn't know who Trevor Cahill was before the start of the season. The youngster has been nothing short of dominant this year in Oakland, however, amassing a record of 17-7 to go with an ERA of 2.81 and a WHIP of 1.07. Those are better overall numbers than C.C. Sabathia, who will probably win the Cy Young due to his 20 wins.
Tim Hudson, Starter, Atlanta Braves:
Without Hudson, who knows what the season would have looked like for the Braves. Hudson no longer is striking out many people but he's been consistently very good throughout the season. As we approach the final portion of the season, Hudson is among the leaders in ERA and WHIP in the National League and has pulled down 16 wins as well. It seemed a dubious decision to re-sign Hudson, but apparently the front office in Atlanta knows what it's doing by keeping guys like Hudson and Wagner.
