Mlb Tickets - Josh Hamilton Vs. Miguel Cabrera For Mvp

This season, the American League has two of the finest MVP candidates it has had for a long time in Josh Hamilton and Miguel Cabrera

. Though there really isn't a bad choice, here's a look at the MVP resumes for each slugger.

Miguel Cabrera, First Base, Detroit Tigers:

Cabrera has been one of the best hitters in the game for a while, but he's never had a season quite like this. For the most part, the numbers speak for themselves. As of Aug. 31, Cabrera was hitting a ridiculous .342 with 33 homers and an MLB-leading 107 RBIs. What's perhaps even more impressive is that he's doing this in the middle of a lackluster lineup without almost any legitimate protection. Cabrera's OPS of 1.084 is also easily the highest in the league, as is his .437 on-base percentage.

What this proves is that Cabrera has really entered a new level in terms of his hitting prowess. Cabrera has always been a guy who hits for a high average without sacrificing power, but now he's also getting much more selective at the plate, which makes for a dangerous combination. There's a good possibility that Cabrera will finish the season somewhere in the neighborhood of a .340 average, 40 round-trippers and 120 RBIs. It's hard to imagine a guy with those credentials not winning the American League MVP.

Josh Hamilton, Outfield, Texas Rangers:

Ever since announcing that he's a legitimate star at the 2008 Homerun Derby at Yankee Stadium, Hamilton should have been on the radar for potential MVP candidates, yet no one saw a season like this coming. As the Rangers continue to cruise in first place in the A.L. West, Hamilton remains their best player and anchors the explosive Rangers batting order. With a .359 average, 31 home runs and 95 RBIs, Hamilton has been one of the most productive players in the league all season long and also is a good right fielder with a powerful throwing arm.

Though Cabrera has the advantage in overall power numbers, Hamilton is leading the entire league in hitting, which is nothing short of astounding for a power hitter. Hamilton also has the advantage of playing for a first place team while Cabrera is stuck on a team that has fallen well outside of the division race. On the downside, Hamilton has walked almost half as many times as Cabrera has (41 to 80) and has struck out nearly 20 extra times.

Prediction: Josh Hamilton.

Cabrera sells plenty of MLB tickets and has put together a fine season, but it may be tough for him to overcome Hamilton while playing for a mediocre A.L. Central team. It seems that Cabrera is destined to have perhaps the best season ever not to win the MVP. Though one can definitely argue that the MVP should really be the most outstanding player in the league, not necessarily the best player on a good team, the current setup doesn't benefit Cabrera. As long as the Rangers can hold on to the division, and it seems that they should without much of a problem, Hamilton should get enough votes to win the American League MVP, even if Cabrera finishes the season as the best player in the league.
