Mlm Training - It's About Time

If you've ever drawn up a budget to get your financials under control

, this article is going to sound familiar. Time, like money, is a finite resource. To spend it wisely and keep in working for us (instead of us working for it) we need to do two things:

1. Pay attention. Both money and time disappear if we ignore them.

2. Take action. For some reason, time management is one of those things that everyone thinks is a good idea but never puts into practice.

MLM Time Management -- The Basics

Focus on three types of time. Just what mix works for you will depend on your own goals and needs. Thinking about time as if it had these three 'flavors' will help you choose the best combination.

Business Construction: This time is dedicated to doing things that build your business. Things like evaluating new ideas, shopping for something business related or reading this article. Construction entails building a base to act from. Whether you are improving your knowledge or upgrading your computer, every business requires structural management. The focus here is on growth and how to do what I do better.

Avoid phone calls, emails and have a clean desk and a mind ready for ideas. This is system building time. It's time that is going to save you time later.

Money Making Activities: For most of us, this is what we think of when we think of business. It's the most rewarding part, both financially and emotionally. Money making activities include things like: contacting clients or prospects, sending out contact emails or shipping product. These activities rely on having a solid base, so business construction can't be ignored.

Rest & Relaxation: You might be thinking, "I don't need to schedule R&R" but you really do to prevent from becoming burned out. Plus, when you don't schedule an afternoon or a day off, R&R can sometimes start leaking into time that should be spent on the business. Remember, time management is all about control - you want time to be your servant instead of your master.

The other reason for scheduling R&R is to give you a incentive to keep working hard, knowing that you have a break coming. I've tricked myself into some pretty effective work because I needed to finish up to 'earn' my night out at the movies.

Time Blocking

At first, it's best to just block out chunks of time that seem 'natural'. You've got an idea of how your day should go and you just keep track in terms of the three categories above. Once you start paying attention, you will find that one or two of the categories above are getting the lion's share of your time and it's going to be obvious where the fix should be. Don't worry, no one is keeping score; you have unlimited chances to get things right.

Make sure you do not waiver when you time block. Use the time for what it was scheduled for. Do not let interruptions steal away your day. Checking your e-mail and placing calls are perfect for this time block. Both allow you to shift time-stealing communications to the right block. For instance, I block out an hour in the morning for emails and phone calls. I follow up with an hour near lunch and another half-hour in the evening. When I end up playing phone tag with someone, I make sure to tell them exactly when I will be available. E-mail seems to be a more focused method of conversation; however, sometimes it is necessary to add the personal touch and use the phone.

Tools

Time management is such an important part of business success that scheduling tools are offered all over the place. I actually like two best. The first is a desktop calendar - those ones with the huge squares for each day. I use that to jot down important dates. Things like deadlines and stuff I don't want to forget go on the pad.

I also use SheduleIt, available as a shareware, but almost any software will do. This software actually has more functionality than I need. The online tutorial is great though, and I really like the ability to 'drill down' to the minute if I like. The important thing is to find something you can use, start using it - and stick with it. Like any tool, it isn't useful if you don't use it.

To be honest, it took me about a month before I really got in the habit of blocking my time and enforcing the 'rules'. The payoff is incredible though. Do I still get the urge to cheat? Sure. But when I do, I feel a little guilty... I am never wondering where I spend my time.

In closing, if you are dedicated to success in your MLM business and apply these techniques you will see a great benefit. In addition to making sure you are applying good time management techniques, it is also important that you are running your MLM business in a effective and efficient manner.
