Mobile Application Development Is Helping The Healthcare Domain

Mobile apps for healthcare are proliferating quickly

. They are available for a variety of purposes, e.g. patient scheduling, remote-patient monitoring, drug reference/information, etc. These apps are also becoming quite useful in the area of chronic disease management. Mobile developers are able to add features like great user experience and ease-of-use to these apps. Mobile application developers and medical professionals are working together to deliver the best of the healthcares and health-advices through mobile apps. Apps dedicated to health are turning into a convenient system for tracking data and receiving various types of reminders.

Users can explore both iTunes and Google Play to find a wide range of apps for clinical disease management, and for conditions including asthma, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, autism and insomnia. So todays health industry is taking mobile technology quite positively. For example, researchers at the University of Washington are working on a mobile application development to monitor asthma by patients breath.

If they succeed, all a patient will need to do is breath into the microphone of his smart phone, and the app will monitor the condition. A researcher in Canada has built a wireless shoe insole that helps diabetic patients keep tracking their foot pressure and receiving alerts on their smart phones. Of course, an app can communicate with a device that tracks how much pressure a diabetic patient is putting on his heels so that a condition like foot ulcer can be avoided.

It is expected that as many as 90% clinicians would be using smart phone clinical apps by the end of 2012. And by 2016 the mobile based healthcare app development is expected to be a $20 billion industry. These are some big figures to make us believe that smart phone apps can really be helpful for both doctors and patients.

But the other side of the coin is totally different. Despite big numbers, more than 95% apps for healthcare are consumer-only products. And most of them are unreliable too. The reason is simplethese are not based on thorough researches. Many of them are only the waste of time and money because they are neither developed by expert mobile developers nor advised by expert clinicians.

There are relatively few excellent apps that can precisely track and manage weight, diet and exercise; control blood pressure; and manage insulin levels. Many of them have lack of standards, and they do not always deliver results as intended. Mobile based health care apps are not currently regulated by FDA and thus it is difficult to separate good apps from ineffective ones.
