Mobile Device Management: A Necessary Solution

In past Enterprise IT used to review and select hand held devices for their employees

. They were supposed to take the decision on who would get devices. The usage of these devices was defined and derived towards the benefit of the enterprise. IT and security wings used to configure the devices, issue them to employees, track the usage and decommission them. Everything right from selection of the device, buying, usage and payment was entirely in control of IT. Mobile Device Management (MDM) was simpler and manageable in those days. In fact the method of managing mobile devices was an exact extension of how IT Enterprise was managing and controlling PC, desktops and laptops.

However, things start changing at a rapid speed as workforce started becoming mobile. One of the greatest change areas remained the pattern how workforce was going mobile. Mobile devices were so user friendly that employees learnt to configure email on their personal hand held devices like- I phones, Androids, Blackberrys, and Tablets etc. Personally owned devices started billowing in every organization with numerous operating systems and applications leaving the IT department in complete chaos. Now the need is of secure network Mobile Device Management rather than of command and control, for any device in order to control the risk.

The Bring your Own Device (BYOD) presents a big management challenge for enterprise as its raising new and significant queries that might have different answers for different organizations like:

How to insist on the security when everyone has its own device?

How would organization know what are all the employees are doing on their mobile devices?

Will the organizations be held liable for actions of employees even when they are performed via personal devices even used for work?

Can one device or phone support used for both office and personal use?

Can there be any defined limit on number of devices used for organizational work or cost to manage growing devices?

These are fundamentally significant questions and are opening gates for altogether new range of challenges, from security, compliance, management, to cost and human capital management. Enterprise has no option but to deal with and tackle these challenges by framing policies related to mobile device management that easily legalize and standardize the procedure of mobility for employees. Corporate require suitable tools to impose policies, control activities, costs and manage risks, across multiple device platforms. They need to draft the policy that can secure the mobile devices.
