Model Railroad scenery themes - Go for what you like
When you start model railroading, sooner or later you'll catch the model train virus and you will want to build complete model railroad scenery. You will want to go beyond of simply having a track built, your train running and some props in your model train scene
Believe me, it will happen. This hobby simply ignites your imagination.
There's ways to imagine, plan and design your model railroad scenery but the best way of starting this process is finding a theme that you want to see replicated in your model train layout.
And the best way to find a theme is going for something that you really like. Better yet, something that you have a passion for.
By doing so it will enable you achieve what you want more easily. Don't put your expectations sky high, don't beat yourself up when something is not up to your dream. Grow as you go.
The main points to consider when selecting a theme for your model railroad scenery are:
the epoch
the location or place
the season
The epoch will enable you to decide on the architecture the overall felling
The location or place will enable you to focus your scene on some geographical location or a specific place.
The season will lead you towards a more realistic scene.
Usually, a good guideline is to decide if your scene will focus on a specific subject or will have a broader view. Do you want to focus on something specific, as a factory, or do you want to have something more general and mix rural and city sights?
To make it stronger provide a good story. Every good theme has one. This will make the scene more appealing.
Go to a library, review pictures books, google it, try to get every bit of information you can about the theme. I can tell you that a couple of my favourite places are photo sites search and Google Maps.
Images sites, such as Flickr, are great places to find great visual cues about the subject that you're researching. Even Google Images can be a great help here.
Google Maps is great when you're researching the terrain. The views are great for you planning. Microsoft's Bing is also great for this.
