Model Railways You Can Ride

A passenger carrying garden railroad may appear an impossible aspiration for most model railway enthusiasts

. However, it is more possible than you might think. With a passenger-hauling locomotive you really get the feeling of being in control just like with a full size train. In what other type of model engineering can you actually get to ride your model?

You do not need a huge garden to enjoy a miniature railway ride. The smallest engines can turn on an eight foot radius curve. This is the style of line you might find in a small industrial or narrow gauge set up.

You also don't require a bowling green flat piece of land to run the line. Locomotives will cope with a slight incline of, for example about 1 in 40. This reduces loads by approximately a half, but even the smallest engines will tow two adults and a child on this gradient of line. Try not to have both tight turns and gradients at the same position though. Having a change of level can be a healthy thing. You can indulge in cuttings, embankments, bridges and viaducts as ways of levelling out the more extreme bumps or hollows and this makes for a much more interesting layout.

Many enthusiasts will be put off by the price of larger equipment, here you may be pleasantly surprised by the latest offerings. Due to production in China some wonderful models are available at cheap prices. Maxitrak battery powered diesels for example start as low as 795 for a kit, or 850 fully built. Steam engines are more costly though, starting in the range 3500 to 4000 for kit or ready to run.

Actually riding your own train must be the ultimate dream of every child with a train set, or even of every railway modelling hobbyist. With a bit of work and planning you could run a ride-on miniature railway in your own garden.
