Models come in all shapes and sizes and some you wouldn't recognise as models if you bumped into them in the street or even found yourself chatting to them at a party. Look at any magazine, browse the internet or switch on the television and you'll see men and women of all ages advertising not just clothes, but everything else from credit cards and pensions to settees and foreign holidays.

Whatever their looks and these vary greatly, of course - what these successful models have in common is that they have worked to create a good portfolio which and found the right agency to market them effectively.

As well as having an element of style and being good looking models need to reflect the make up of society and so model agencies know that older people and those who don't have the stunning looks required for a Vogue model or catwalk queen can still earn a good living.

A good smile and a pleasant face that people can relate to is often more important than cheek bones and a tiny waist. Modelling agencies that supply models who look more like ordinary people are some of the most successful and are more likely to be on the speed dial of casting agents, magazine editors and creative directors than those that specialise solely in supplying people for Paris and Milan catwalk shows.
