BMX racing first developed in the 1970s in America and the craze spread across the

Atlantic to these shores by the 1980s and at the height of its first incarnation, it took the world by storm. The first BMX bikes were adapted wheelie bikes in the US but soon, specialist BMX bikes were built to competition specifications and manufactured in ever increasing numbers. Perhaps it was the futuristic padding and frame shape, the cutting edge bladed spokes or the Imperial Storm trooper-style crash helmets, but there was always an air of mystique about the art of BMX and something very enigmatic about those who participated in it. This special aura was captured in films such as BMX Bandits, which saw young BMX enthusiasts become crime-solving suburban ninjas, foiling robbers and reprobates with swift skids and stunts. In the mid 1980s in the UK, one of the most sought after BMX bikes was the Raleigh Mag Burner, and it did look like some strange yet beautiful object from the future, with its sleek white tubular frame, digital logo graphics, various pads and awesome black blade mag wheel spokes. In the past few years, BMX has enjoyed a renaissance, and the sport has become far more professional and the stunts have become ever more spectacular. As modern BMX attracts a new legion of enthusiasts, bike designs have become more specialised, so it is worth considering just which BMX is best suited for your requirements and level of proficiency. Whether you require a true BMX to cruise around your local park in old skool style, a freestyle bike to practice tricks and stunts, or a dirt jumper to catch some serious air, there are now many fantastic brands and variations available online and in various specialist outlets. Perennial favourites Raleigh have recently reintroduced the iconic burner range with a modern twist and brands such as Diamondback, Blank, Barracuda and Redline have taken BMX technology into the 21st Century.
