Modern Communication Harmful?

Before we examine the effects of communication media on children, we will firs take a small survey of linguistics itself and evaluate the nature of language, its relationship to our inner selves, and how misusing our uniquely human ability for language could have adverse, if not down rite, pernicious effects on our lives.

The two most prominent theories in linguistics are those held by B.F Skinner and Noam Chomsky respectively. The origins of these theories are found in the philosophic positions of David Hume and Immanuel Kant, so will make our discussion more thorough to have a least a limited understanding of these two diametrically opposed positions.

For Hume, the answer to the question of how we relate to our world and how we formulate our opinions is through the senses. We receive our experiences through our eyes, ears est. and formulate our opinions base on them. To Hume there are no innate ideas; nothing is intrinsically human other then what we experience and the more complex interrelationships of those experiences that give rise to our ideas.

For Kant, there are fundamental innate ideas. These are time and space, he hold that although our experiences play a role in our formulations of our options they nevertheless are being processed by our innate ideas i.e., time and space.

To summarize (and you will have to forgive the lack of adequate explanation of the above, seeing as the full coverage of these philosophical concept fill thousands of pages and attesting to capture then in two short paragraphs is not really possible ) to Hume we are essential mannequins reacting to the world. Hume says that we react and are products of our world and have no fundamental uniqueness. Kant says that we are not mannequins or automatons at all but rather that we relate to the world from within ourselves and bring a uniquely human perspective to experience through our innate ideas.

Both Hume and Kant were inherited by B.F Skinner I the case of Hume and Noam Chomsky in the case of Kant.

Skinner says that language itself is the result of "operant behavior" and conditioning. This means that our ability for language is the result of social/environmental (external) reinforcement. And has nothing to do in any way with something internal.

Chomsky says that language is only properly learned and understood because of our internal capacity for it. There is an internal universal grammar which allows for people to have to capacity for language.

So all of the above discussion will help you define what side your on when it comes to the use of communication in general language in particular.

Should children use text, email, Facebook, phone calls, and other social networks to communicate of should the emphasis (although it might sound old fashion) be on face to face conversation.

If Hume and Skinner are correct, then these "advancements" in communication are progressive and bring us as humans to a more advanced level of communication (despite our implicit mannequin status) if Kant and Chomsky are correct, then face to face conversation is the most beneficial way to communicate and overuse of artificial communication will, if it does not already, have adverse effects on our minds and our very definition of self.
