Modern Day Mayan Portrait Art

Archeologists have, over the years uncovered a great deal of evidence about the Mayan people

. Occupying a large area of Central America around 2000 BC-1500 AD, they are now recognized for their early contributions to art in their many temples and other areas. A few pieces of beautiful mayan portrait art has been recovered at some of these sites.

Historians have been amazed at the intricate temples, pyramids and other constructions made by the Mayan people. This, in addition to their political and complex social order shows they were many centuries ahead of other people in existence at that time. Today the decendents are scattered through Mexico and Central America. In the country of Guatemala fifty percent of the population is composed of their descendents.

Today Mayan art in the form of weaving, carving, pottery, painting and other art forms is still being created. These products are sold in local markets as well as around the world and are in great demand. Their weaving is still in the tradition of older times and is highly sought after.

The majority of the ancient murals and paintings of the Mayans have, for the most part, been lost over the years. The few that have been found showed intricate detail to face, garments and other things reproduced. A blue color, called Maya Blue, has kept its original beauty through the years as shown on recovered items. Unfortunately, modern man has been unable to reproduce this outstanding color.

Mayan artists are now producing beautiful pictures in the form of portraits of local merchants and others. These portraits are done in acrylic or oil paints and show interesting people of the region. These are very colorful and reflect the culture, joy and sadness of these magnificent people.

The Mayan paintings are becoming well known to connoisseurs of fine art. On display at upscale galleries, they occupy a preferred location. Face and dress, as well as background, of the paintings make them stand out above the rest and make them a desired item for those looking for superior art.

Having mayan portrait art in one's home or office shows others that the owner is knowledgeable concerning what is not only practical but what will make their decorating plans complete. Professional home decorators are recommending this art, especially for those planning a Tuscan theme. In an office atmosphere, one of these portraits is the first thing to catch the visitor's attention with its striking colors and details and makes the office's atmosphere exude a welcome feeling.
