The value of cooling and preserving food by means of freezing has been appreciated for millennia
. The earliest recorded ice houses were built in Mesopotamia almost 4000 years ago and consisted of ice pits lined with tamarisk branches. The ice was used by the rich to cool their wines and other drinks. The Greeks and Romans adopted the use of ice houses and also preserved snow collected from the mountains and many other civilizations realized the value of refrigeration as a means of preserving food from decay.

Restaurants and hotels need to keep many different foodstuffs on hand to satisfy their customers and often have large cooling and storage facilities available, ensuring that the freshness of meat, seafood and other perishables are maintained.
Smaller households may find that a standard size fridge with a freezer compartment either below or above the fridge compartment work well for them. Larger families may wish to invest in side-by-side fridge/freezer units which provide adequate space for virtually any household need. Small restaurants may also find that a side-by-side fridge/freezer meets their storage needs.
The modern fridge/freezer comes with plenty of features which make modern living more convenient. A few typical features are
- Energy star ratings. With the trend towards more environmentally-friendly products, most newer models come with this feature, which reduce the carbon footprint by reducing energy usage

- Separate storage areas for different foods, ensuring that meat, vegetables, eggs, fish and chicken are stored in the areas of the fridge most suitable for maintaining the proper temperatures suitable for these particular products
- Ice cube and cold water dispensers - this feature eliminates the unnecessary opening of the fridge door, which allows cool air to escape, using more energy
- Touch control and LCD displays
- Self-defrosting features - many people find defrosting the fridge a time-consuming and tedious chore, but one which is necessary to prevent ice build-up which reduces valuable space and consumes energy
- Adjustable shelves - these enable tall bottles to be kept upright and smaller items may be placed in trays which have been adjusted to suit
- User-friendly refrigerants also reduce the carbon footprint
