Modern garden decor constitutes the ground and aesthetic center of the modern garden

. While it uses organic elements to support its structures, it insists on maintaining a unique independence from nature that characterizes its attempt to explore the unknown through the generation of abstract form.

With sophisticated modern materials, it takes and basic geometric forms, and works to establish a purely mental awareness of itself in the uniquely human world of cognition that struggles to understand its relationship to Nature as something that feels it is more than simple biology

This is not to say that modern garden decor abandons all sense of beauty and proportion. The perception that all contemporary design is jagged and pain-driven is a stereotype of extremist interpretation. In our industry, we must always remain mindful of beauty and form while seek to create accouterments that work like jewelry on the landscape.

Simple shapes must be used as the building blocks of a new kind of beauty that arises out of pure intent. This requires a great deal of innovation on the part of the landscape designer. He or she must be highly creative with garden design without neglecting the relationships of interdependency that link individual landscape elements into a fabric of unified elements.

The materials we use in tend to vary widely, and the combination of elements we can create is limited only by the extent of our imaginations. While this represents a nearly infinite realm of variety and surprise, there are nonetheless a few characteristics of modern garden decor that are always present in every individual design.

Reflectivity, eminence, light, and clarity are attributes that are consistently repeated both as visual markers and ongoing themes in the many modern garden elements that our designers create. Many surfaces we use are innately reflective and bright by nature. Others require a little polish to emerge into a new world of radiance.

Many of the basic geometric shapes used in modern garden decor are redesigned images that originated in ancient times as iconic symbols in collective consciousness. Linking to the archetypal past in this manner enables us to begin with something grounded and formed in antiquity that emerges today in a new awareness of the ever-evolving now.

One example could be the symbol of a column, pillar, or obelisk we have all seen in depictions of old civilizations and mythic places. An image such as this suggests the monumental, and evokes all types of mental pictures of lush jungles, burning deserts, or rivers flowing out of mystery, stone, and fire.

All of this can be taken from the raw energy of pure thought and collective memory and expressed in contemporary landscape design and modern garden decor.

For instance, we can mount a steel post or stucco column, polished and gleaming, in the center of a hardscape structure, ornamental rock formation, or a linear formation of dark green ground cover. This draws the eye to the center of the garden, which then flows along the lines of geometric thought that emanate from the center piece.

Steel walls can be used in a similar way to frame gardens and hang ornamental objects or baskets of living things. This image conveys a sense of boundaries and ordered magnitude and is an excellent way to create focal points of transition and establish lines of correspondence and relationship.

When we place these structures in correlation to a contemporary style home or modern office building, magnitude supports magnitude, and absolutism multiplies the awareness of form.

Steel also makes for a fine contemporary fountainhead that supplies current to a disappearing fountain or infinity pool. Its reflectivity can be further correlated with that of the water by combining it with other elements made from basalt, granite, marble, and glass. Amalgamation along these lines gives modern garden decor a strange, complimentary complexity more appropriate to multi-dimensional nature of water. It helps better feed the stream of pure abstract consciousness, and it establishes a departure from dependence on the organic in a quest for new realms of perception where consciousness sustains itself on pure awareness alone.
