More than a decade ago the DVD was introduced as the innovative technology that advanced the film industry and provided sound and video to households worldwide. The next revolution involved the Blu-Ray Discs and the Blu-Ray Player. The name evolved by combining the colour of the laser, which is blue, with the optical ray. The title was then transformed into an appropriate trademark version.

Blu-ray Technology Increases Storage Space

The technology increases storage capacity within a small space much like an SD card or the hard disk of a TomTom GPS system. Blu-Ray discs contain a higher storage capacity specifically designed for high-definition audio/visual that includes photographs and movies. A typical single-sided DVD contains enough storage capacity to hold 4.7GB of data. This equates to little more than a two-hour standard movie.

A high-definition film requires up to five times more storage space as it provides a sharper image. A single sided Blu-ray disc provides up to 27GB of storage space which will hold more than a single high-definition movie or 13 hours of standard data. A double-sided disc has the capacity to store 50GB of data, which equates to 4.5 hours of high-definition data or in excess of 20 hours of standard data.

The Difference in Technology

The information is specially encoded and recorded as bumps on the grooves of the disc. The larger the storage capacity, the smaller and more compact the data is when stored. Blu-ray lasers must be highly accurate and precise to detect these minute pieces of data. Typical DVD's are read with a red laser, but the Blu-ray laser has a smaller wavelength and beam to readily focus on the smaller bits of data.

Information is recorded and sandwiched between two layers on a DVD. If the surface is damaged or the DVD is not seated perfectly flat, the laser does not accurately read the data. Information is recorded on the top of Blu-ray discs, eliminating the distortion factors. A protective coating is applied to the top of the disc to discourage fingerprints and scratches.

Numerous companies are competing for the attention of consumers. JVC, Toshiba, Samsung all manufacture Blu-ray technology. An LG Blu-Ray Player is also available. Not to be left out, the Sony PSP allows you to watch Blu Ray movies by transfer. Digital cameras now include the technology to record in high-definition format. These cameras along with digital camera accessories are gaining popularity on the market.
