Moisture Scavengers are highly effective for Urethane Coatings and Sealants

The existence of moisture in polyurethanes is the foremost reason liable for the failure or loss of performance in coatings and sealants. Moisture has a unique property to react with isocyanate for produce gaseous carbon dioxide that in turn exhibits bubbling, pinholing and other issues. There are primarily two reasons for the prevalence of moisture contamination. This moisture contamination can emerge either from within the formulation or as result of increased atmospheric humidity. It is universally known that solvents may contain some traces of water which can sometimes lead to the dispersion of urea crystals.

In the same way, pigments, fillers and flatting agents can procure absorbed moisture which produces carbon dioxide gas on reaction with isocyanate. This carbon dioxide is then stored within the film surface, particularly in high solids formulations resulting into pinholes or bubbles. The other reason is the detraction from the surface appearance of the coating which may also results into prominent reductions in performance properties such as chemical and abrasion resistance.

The existence of water in one-component moisture cure polyurethanes results into poor in-can stability. In a parallel manner, moisture present in isocyanates results in the production of CO2 which dissolves in the product subsequently results in foaming in case the container is open. In the most disastrous cases, containers may begin to bulge and lids burst as a result of excessive vapour pressure.

When two component urethane coatings are put up under extreme humid conditions, there are more chances for the isocyanate to react discriminatorily with atmospheric moisture. This isocyanate/water reaction results into micro bubbles on the surface that generally cause loss of gloss and hazing. Oxazolidine is meant for use as an effective moisture scavenger in urethane coatings and sealants. It can also be used to reduce the chances of residual moisture from solvents, polyols and prepolymers and also from plasticizers and pigments. These moisture scavengers restrict gassing and gelling in one-component moisture cure systems.

Moisture scavengers are widely used for the removal of water from polyols in two component polyurethanes as well as the removal of water from solvents, plasticisers, and pigment pastes. It prevents gassing and gelling in single component systems. Incorez is also a global leader in oxazolidine chemistry, manufacturing a diverse range of products marketed under the Incozol umbrella. The Incozol range has been widely adopted in 1K and 2K polyurethane coatings, as well as 1K pu sealants, where they operate as moisture scavengers, reactive diluents and latent curing agents
