Merit based grants are grants or scholarships that are given to students by colleges

, universities or third party organizations, and these are based on a student's athletic, artistic or academic accomplishments or ratings. When it comes to academic scholarships, a student's academic record is taken into account as well as SAT scores and ACT scores. Usually, an essay is requested from the student to further demonstrate a student's academic abilities.

A student, who may be interested in pursuing a biology degree, may submit an essay based on a biological theory or study, while a student interested in mathematics might submit an essay on a mathematical formula and its purposes and functions. In terms of fine arts, the student normally must meet certain academic requirements in reference to their GPA and their ACT or SAT scores. After these requirements are met, the student must audition or submit works of their artistic talent to be considered for a scholarship. There are also scholarships given due to a student's work with a specific group, such as the Girl Scouts of America, or the Boy's Club, for instance. Competition for scholarships is normally pretty tough, with several hundred students competing for the same scholarship, so many students start preparing several months to years ahead of audition and submission dates. The reason scholarships are so prized is because they are money that does not have to re-paid at the end of the college career. Some scholarships are what are considered to be "full ride" scholarships which provide the student with a scholarship that covers tuition, housing, books and more. Other scholarships merely cover tuition, or a smaller portion than that. Merit based scholarships are given without regard to a student's particular financial need, and are only based on the student's athletic, academic or artistic abilities.
