Money to Attend College: Obama Scholarships for Moms
Money to Attend College: Obama Scholarships for Moms
For many people, a bright future starts with good education. President Obama is a good example, and he has shown his commitment to helping others. Grants and scholarships are just the beginning of efforts to try to make over higher education. College expenses continue to increase even as the economy slumps. Scholarship packages rarely cover the full amount for tuition, books and housing. Low-income students suffer the most if they are unable to secure enough scholarship or grant money. One group that is particularly hit hard is single mothers. More education helps single mothers achieve on their jobs and take care of their families. The President believes in this and has begun a mission to create scholarships for moms. There is no difference between Federal Pell Grants and Obama grants. The name "Obama grants" came as a result of the President's emphasis on educating moms. These grants award a student over $5,000 to go to college. Before Pell grants maxed out at about $4,000. These grants can be used to cover many of the miscellaneous college expenses. There's also another great program: the American Opportunity Tax Credit. With this tax credit, the first $4,000 of college expenses are free. This is a worthy incentive, especially for schools that are less expensive. A grant for a working mother as well as a tax credit can help fund much-appreciated educational advancement. Students have numerous school options: full-time or part-time, 2-year or 4-year college, multiple majors. Moms and students of all kinds can go to school with a little less to worry about. The President has demonstrated that he considers this issue a priority. Through the recent stimulus package, many undergraduate and graduate loans will be less of a burden. There is more government emphasis on properly preparing students for their future at all levels of education. Since many overlook community colleges, there is emphasis on increasing their effectiveness and appeal. Community college is important to prepare students for a 4-year college but also to prepare them for a 2-year degree or technical skill. In his Reclaiming the American Dream speech in 2007, Obama said, "We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." With the measures he has taken to this point, the President has demonstrated he means his words. Scholarships for moms are only a small part of the mission to help educate more people. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
