Monitor Cables - Types Of Monitor Cables

Most of today's computer monitors may be LCD panels

, but there are a number of different types of ways that you can connect this single type of computer monitor to the rest of your computer. Monitor cables or monitor connections can vary depending on the type of the monitor and the size of the monitor. Older monitors may require the use of analog VGA cables, while the newer monitors are going to use digital signals carried by DVI cables, HDMI cables or Display Port cables. Each of these cables is different, with different connectors, lengths, colors and other details depending on their use.

When it comes to monitor cables, there are several different choices that you are going to come across. These basic options are VGA cables, DVI cables, HDMI cables, Display Port tables, Mini Display Port cables and USB cables. Each of these cables is different in its benefits and drawbacks, appearance, features and use. VGA stands for Video Graphics Array. This type of cable carries an analog signal across a 15 pin cable. This type of monitor cable is especially useful when it comes to older types of LCD monitors and most CRT monitors. LCD monitors may sometimes show artifacts and noise when using a VGA cable, so a digital cable is typically recommended.

DVI stands for Digital Video Interface. This is actually one of the more common types of digital connections that you will use to connect a monitor to your computer. These cables can have as many as 24 pins to suit a digital signal and an additional 4 pins for the analog signal. These cables are available in several different forms, including Single and Dual link DVI cables. DVI dual link cables were released in 1999 and offered a resolution of up to 2560x1600. The digital signal means that LCD monitors are not going to experience noise or artifacts like with VGA.

HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. This is the standard for most digital signals that are going to an LCD television or other equipment in a home theater setup. HDMI is becoming increasingly popular for computers as well, so many graphics cards and monitors are now being constructed with included HDMI ports. HDMI cables carry digital audio as well as digital video, and they deliver similar resolutions to DVI cables, though they are significantly smaller and carry only 19 pins.
