Monitoring Car Tires
Cars require regular servicing and maintenance to ensure that everything is in the proper order
. However, no amount of servicing can reverse the wear and tear that various parts of the car receive from daily use. One of the parts of the car which is most susceptible to damage from everyday use is car tires.
Everyday driving, along with rough roads and changes in the weather all contribute to the deterioration of car tires. While wear and tear is acceptable to a certain degree, the condition of the tires do have to be within acceptable limits for it to be safe to drive and for the tires to function as well as they should.
There are various things that a driver has to check with the tires to make sure that everything is in order. This is part of the regular maintenance that tires require.
Tire Pressure
Tire pressure is the amount of air pressure inside the tires. If there is too much or too little air pressure, the wear and tear on the tires end up being uneven. If this happens too much, the control of the driver over the vehicle can be compromised. This may also lessen the traction of the cars on the road and reduce the mileage that the car can get out of the fuel.
Tire Rotation
Tire rotation is not really something that should be checked on the car tires. It is a practice that should be done periodically so that they will last longer. The manual that comes with the car contains information on how the tire rotation should be done. At every rotation, each tire should be moved to the place diagonal to where it originally was. This way, the car tires will wear out in a more or less even manner. This can make the tires last longer and work better as well.
Tread Wear
The treads on the car tires are placed on there so that there will be enough friction between them and the road. With continuous use, the treads get worn out and they are not as deep as they use to be. Many car tires come with an easy way to measure if the treads are too worn out. They have something called wear-bars, which are found in between the treads. If the treads are as deep as these wear-bars, this is an indication that the tire is worn out and has to be replaced. For car tires without the wear-bars, a measuring device can be used. This device is available in most stores that sell car tires and spares.
Wheel Alignment
If the wheels are aligned properly, this means that the weight of the car is distributed evenly among all four car tires. A car with properly aligned wheels can also travel in a straight line. One way to tell if the wheels are aligned perfectly is if opposite wheels are positioned at a constant angle with the road. The wheels should not be tilted inward or outward. Also, if the steering wheel is crooked even when the car is perfectly straight, this means that the wheels have to be realigned.
