Recently, Information Security professionals at Apple patched an overwhelming 134 vulnerabilities in MAC OS. The latest patch release surpasses Apple's previous record of patching 90 vulnerabilities. Most of the vulnerabilities patched were critical, which could serve as vectors for arbitrary code execution. Out of 134 vulnerabilities patched, 55 pertained to Adobe Flash player, 16 others related to X11, 9 pertained to QuickTime, 4 to operating system X's ImageIO component and remaining 4 affected Apply Type Services (ATS). The patches were related to vulnerabilities in the Snow Leopard operating system (OS X 10.6) and Leopard (OS X 10.5) operating system.

The security update also includes the much delayed patch for signed mismatch vulnerability in ATS Server for OS X 10.5. The vulnerability causes arbitrary code execution on viewing or downloading a PDF document with maliciously crafted and embedded Compact Font Format (CFF). The vulnerability was first reported by Core Security Technologies. The vulnerabilities were reported to Apple by various information security professionals, who used ethical hacking to discover the vulnerabilities. Customers reported booting problems after applying the monster security upgrades released by Apple. Information security professionals at Apple also addressed over two dozen stability and reliability issues.Software developers are placed with the challenge of coming up with newer versions of software products at regular intervals, leaving the scope for coding errors.

Hackers abuse these errors by constantly endeavoring to find and exploit vulnerabilities. Further, easily available automated hacking tools are placing tremendous challenge for software developers. Notwithstanding the gigantic security update, security challenges still exist for Mac OS users as large numbers of flaws still remain unpatched.
