Mont Blanc - Chamonix And Beyond

Its only 88 kilometres from Geneva to Chamonix

, but its also the beginning of one of the greatest holidays any Alpine holidaymaker skier or not can have! The valley thats the first stop to climbing Mont Blanc is definitely a place to remember even if you arent planning on climbing Mont Blanc!

Whats there to be excited about in this gorgeous Alpine destination? Here are a few facts about where you may be going.

The Valley

The Chamonix-Mont Blanc valley includes the area between Servoz and the Swiss border, which comprises the towns of Les Houches, Chamonix, Les Praz, Argentiere and Vallorcine. When making your arrangements for accommodation and airport transfer from Geneva to Chamonix, make quite sure you are clear which particular resort is your destination. Each town in the valley has its own particular charm; for those who have the time and the inclination, a stopover at various points on the charming drive from Geneva to Chamonix can be a great way to pass the time.

The town

Chamonix itself, located near the peaks of the Aiguilles Rouges and the Aiguille du Midi, is on the north side of Mont Blanc. Famous for hosting the 1924 Winter Olympics, it is a resort well-loved and visited by mountaineers from all over the world, especially because of its ownership of the famed peak. In fact, on the transfer from Geneva to Chamonix, it is fairly common to hear conversations in many different languages, giving rise to the joke that trips to the town are summit meetings, referring to the towns altitude and different nationalities of its visitors.

Aiguille Du Midi

The trip from the airport to the town already involves a climb to a higher altitude, but the highest ride waits in the town itself! Home to one of the highest cable cars in the world, the Aiguille Du Midi starts at 1035 metres and finishes at 3810 metres - making it the cable car with the greatest vertical range in the world. It also has a three-kilometre stretch without pillars making it the worlds longest cable car ride of the sort. From Aiguille du Midi, there is also the option of a ride to Helbronner in Italy.

Les Houches

For those with families, the quaint village resort of Les Houches is the best place to spend a traditional mountain holiday. A mere six kilometres further on, this village in the heart of the Mont-Blanc region offers a safe, yet front-row view of the peaks surrounding the valleymost notably the majestic Mont Blanc.

The Bellevue cable car in the village of Les Houches offers spectacular sights of the valley, as well as both the Mont Blanc massif on one side and the Brevent on the other, with a short walk allowing visitors a peek at the far side of the mountain.

Vallorcine

A little further on is the town of Vallorcine, a wonderful nature retreat with chamois, red deer and squirrels. While it is a great place to visit in winter, it comes alive even more during the spring and summer.
