This is probably one of the most confusing concepts for players who want to learn how to play poker. Blind bets are bets that are placed in the pot before cards are dealt, or before the two players on the dealer buttons immediate left see their cards.

Typically, the player in the very first position posts a blind bet that is half the amount bet by the player in the second position. This bet is known as the small blind, and in some games, it may be as little as only a third or as much as two-thirds of the size of the second bet. The second bet is called the big blind, and it is posted by the next player to the left. Once the blind bets have been made, the cards are dealt and the next player to the left starts the first betting round.

The blind bets in Texas Hold 'em Poker are considered as active bets or live bets. For this reason, the player has the option of checking, calling, raising, or folding when the betting action comes back around to their position. The exemption occurs during the first round betting, where the only options are folding, betting, or raising. Only one bet and three raises per player are allowed during the first round.

The mandatory posting of the blind ensures fairness and equality among all players. It prevents them from constantly switching seats to gain a positional advantage, or from entering games in a late position and then leaving before they are required to post the big blind.
