Becoming popular in the 1970s, mood rings are still around today. Although not as popular as they once were, the liquid found within the stone is able to tell what mood the individual who wears it is in. Invented by a man named Joshua Reynolds, it uses the thermotrophic substance to read someone's body temperature to then change in color reflecting the individual's emotions.

Although Reynolds was first in popularizing the ring, technically it was discovered by a man named Marvin Wernick in 1975. Wernick had witnessed a doctor using the thermotropic to take a child's temperature. He then created the idea of making them oval shaped and setting them in either a gold or silver setting. It was because of Reynolds that they became so popular which is why he is often credited as its creator.

The question when it comes to mood rings is whether or not they actually work. Without a question the ring does change in color, however can they really show your mood? Supposedly, each color means something. For example, blue is calm, green is average, yellow is tense, brown is nervous, while violet blue is happy.

Consider when someone's body temperature goes up. This can occur from things such as passion or from the individual being happy. When a person is stressed out physically their blood will flow in a different direction, away from one's skin and into their organs. This makes their skin colder than average. This means that the ring on your finger will reflect that emotion. Since body temperatures are changed with mood, then technically, the ring does work. It does change color to reflect certain emotions.

This piece of jewelry is only worn on one's finger. Usually it is a faux gemstone created out of glass or quartz, which is then filled with the actual thermochromic crystal in liquid form. The average temperature of human skin is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. The ring is displayed to be neutral at this particular temperature. When the ring becomes the color black this signifies that the ring is no longer working or accurate.

Different individuals have different body temperatures so it is hard to say whether or not the ring displays the proper mood for everyone. When a woman is going through her menstrual cycle her body temperature will be warmer. When infection is being fought off, temperatures are also elevated. These will impact the accuracy of the ring as well as the surrounding air. Mood rings and their dependability vary depending on the individual who wears it and what type of environment they are in.
