Moon in astrology
Moon = Lord Shiva, mother, forest land, age
Moon denotes mind and mother. It takes light from Sun and is the junior representative of Sun. While Sun may be hot tempered, Moon is always cool and carries out its instructions peacefully. The self, body and soul of a man (Sun); head (Mercury), eyes (Saturn); wife and family (Venus), mother and mind (Moon); brother in law (from wife and sister sides) indicated by Mars is positive and brothers, preceptors and father (Jupiter) all seek help of Moon.
Sun is the generator of power, the Moon is the conductor of power lent by the Sun. Moon shines in the reflected light of the Sun. Where Sun gives the spirit and life to all planets, Moon rules the lives of the beings on Earth. Sun represents individuality whereas Moon shows one's personality. Moon being feminine in gender, is the significator of mother, the person under the influence of Moon becomes timid, vacillating, receptive and convertible.
The Moon Nodes
The Moon has two nodes, the north, and the south. Rahu the north node and Ketu the south node. These nodes are not planets, but the two points at which the Moon's monthly path crosses the Sun's annual path (ecliptic) around the Earth. These are abstract points, but astrology accords them the power and effective status of planets.
The north node, also called the Dragon's Head, shows the direction in which the individual is heading. This may be difficult, for challenges must be met and new qualities developed.
The south node, also called the Dragon's Tail, shows where the individual is coming from characteristics and behaviour taken for granted that should, perhaps, be left behind. In times of stress, individuals may retreat for safety to the qualities of the south node, but unless they face up to the demands of the north node, there will be a failure to develop the birth potential to the full.
It is generally believed in Hindu Astrology that the period after the Sunset, the first part of the evening is controlled by Rahu and last part of the night before Sun rise is controlled by Ketu. In between period of night is controlled by Saturn. Full night is denoted also by Moon, whether waxing or waning. Waxing Moon is considered a benefic and waning Moon a malefic one. This Moon period is shared by Jupiter, Sun and Moon. The evil (Rahu Ketu, Saturn) try to mix poison in the milk (Moon) and spoil comforts of night. So Moon's influence is over Jupiter, Sun, and Moon and also over Rahu Ketu and Saturn. On this basis, effect of Moon is analyzed.
While Jupiter is Lord of all planets, Moon controls age (Moon effect is divided into three parts Jupiter, Sun, Moon). It reflects effect of Sun in natal chart or transit, affected by enemy or polluted, still not destructive. Prior Jupiter and latter Ketu, both adversely affect Moon. If Jupiter is prior to Moon, but no mixing by aspect Moon gets spoilt resulting in discomfort to parents. Jupiter aspect on Moon benefits mother. Mercury prior to Moon poisons it, especially in H. No. 3, 4, 7, 9.
Moon has the lordship of Cancer. She is exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio. Her highest exaltation point is 3 degree of Taurus and the lowest debilitation point is 3 degree of Scorpio. The first 3 degree of Taurus constitute Moon's exaltation portion and the remaining part of 27 degree are her Mooltrikona.
