Everyone who has ever written in a diary remembers getting their first one

. Traditionally, they were put together like a book, with blank pages in the middle. A weak lock would often secure it closed by fastening the cover to the back. They would come with a tiny key, designed to unlock the lock. Back then, those were the only type of diary available for purchase. Times have changed. We now have the option to download free journal software to install on our computers.

Traditional journals serve the main purpose of writing in one. The author has a place he or she feels comfortable and safe expressing their inner most thoughts and opinions. However, they do not offer the functions offered by free journal software.

You can edit your entries in a regular diary, but you have to do it the old fashion way. If the entry is written in pen or marker, it may be difficult or impossible to correct errors. With software, a spell check feature is almost always included. A spell check feature enables you to make sure your journal entry is typed perfectly before you save it.

As already mentioned, most styles of traditional diaries are manufactured with a lock that clicks together from the front and back covers. That is because privacy is one of the most important things to someone who writes in a diary or journal. With diary software, you can go a step further than the traditional lock that can often be broken easily, and password protect your diary. This means you can set a password, and no one will be able to see your journal entries without first entering the password you have set.

There are many more reasons people are choosing more modern diary options as opposed to the more traditional style. Most programs allow you to add pictures to your journal entries, as well as a link to a website, or any type of web graphic. This is not possible in a regular diary.

Diaries and journals have been a popular item for many, many years. As technology has changed, the journal choices and options available have grown. Because of many different factors, diary software is quickly taking the place of the traditional diary.
