More Swing Speed-the Holy Grail For Golfers
One of the eternal struggles of any golfer is wanting more swing speed.
Striving for longer drives, more compressed iron shots, shorter irons into the long par fours, to outdrive their friends, all sound pretty good right?
It is a simple equation. More club head speed = more distance!!
Individuals usually think that more clubhead speed and more arm speed will produce longer golf shots, in essence they are correct, but.
How would you like to have even more effortless swing speed though? By increasing hip speed, we can actually increase swing speed up to 25 x per 1 mph of hip rotation speed due to leverage points and angles.
We can perform golf fitness and strength exercises that enhance all the areas of our physiques that will produce maximum output when swinging the club if we develop the correct sequence, movement and muscles.
There are of course technical aspects to developing correct swing mechanics to produce a more prominent swing speed, grip, posture, lag development and so on, but I won't go into that today.
During a golf swing the speed of the club often hits 100 miles an hour, this journey from the important transfer and initiation of the golf swing takes approximately 0.2 seconds to accelerate the club to this speed.
An average male player will utilize 30 lbs of muscle to generate 4 horsepower during a golf swing using most of his bodies joints, this can be 900 kg of force being focussed right at the ball at the precise moment of impact. (Cochran, AJ and Stobbs, J. 1999).
Keep in mind this is an average speed, many golfers out there far exceed these mph and swing speeds. I am one of those, for me to hit my regular 300 + yard drives, often I will reach swing speeds in the area of 115-120 mph or more if I let loose a little.
This is done by solid swing foundations, timing and correct technique. However my consistent high swing speeds have always been due to the addition of efficient speed enhancing golf exercises, golf strength training and overall functional physical athletic development.
Therefore I will add to the formula;
Golf exercise = more swing speed = more distance.
By improving functional strength and stimulating enhancement in the correct muscle fibers (think of a 100 metre sprinter, they mostly recruit fast twitch muscles fibers), grooving correct motions and alike, increased swing speed as an occurrence becomes faster without the need to "lash at the ball".
It is after all, our body that must still swing the club to generate swing speed.
Here is just a link to one of many golf exercise specifically designed for such a task that you can do at home with rubber tubing or as you will in the gym. An alternative is to try with correctly set with cables.
Now, not one golf exercise will do the job,
A complete golf specific athletic golf training program will though.
You can give this exercise a try and feel the effects fairly quickly, you can also introduce some of the other exercises introduced on the YouTube channel, but be warned that only a complete golf fitness program tailored to your needs will yield the greatest results to you and your golf game.
