More Traits Of Successful People

In our last article, we looked at traits that are readily found in successful people, traits that many of us would do well to incorporate into our own lives. The information was too much to confine to a single article, so we're doing Part II.

Successful people define success and then go after it. In another life, this author was determined to become a full time musician with a base located in the Southeastern United States, doing an average of 130 dates a year. I achieved that goal, so while I might not have been successful when compared to say, Michael Jackson, I did exactly what I set out to do. I enjoyed the fruits of that labor for several years before making the decision to carve out a career as a full time writer, which I have also been able to achieve.

They look ahead and are not distracted by momentary obstacles. They choose to focus on what can become as opposed to what momentarily may be a bad situation.

Successful people take it for granted that they will succeed. Failure is not an option for them and they will take whatever steps are necessary to make sure that they get where they want to go.

Successful people are not victims of circumstance, nor do they blame other people, their surroundings, or less than desirable conditions for the state they may find themselves in. Circumstance may be unavoidable at times, but it is not something they will allow to detract from their goals.

They make quick decisions, and are reluctant to back off from them. They choose instead to be persistent even in the face of considerable failures. Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times while trying to perfect the light bulb..can you imagine if he had given up the 9,999th time?

A successful person is not afraid to take risks. Of course there is always the chance you may fail, but successful people choose to concentrate on the possible payoff.

On a related note, successful people are confident in the extreme. They believe in themselves, their vision, and their plan for getting there. They also know that perseverance will eventually pay off.

Successful people embrace change. They recognize the importance of newer tools and technology and will learn it and use it to its fullest potential to get things done. Can you name a single successful figure in today's society that hasn't made proper use of the latest technological and logistical advances? I thought not.

Successful people have a narrow focus. The jack of all trades concept doesn't work well when you are trying to be a success at something. Know what you want to do and focus like a laser beam on that thing. You will end up being far more productive than if you tried to divide all of your eggs among thirty different baskets.

Speaking of focus, successful people like to be focused on what they are doing. You will find that they have little patience for anything that detracts or distracts from that focus.

One word: optimism. It helps to have a positive outlook on life as a whole. Seeing the negative in everything will effectively hamstring you when it comes to making it or breaking it in life.

Another word: networking. Successful people know that you can't lose if you surround yourself with talented people. It can only help bring your performance level up. I mentioned my own music career earlier.I may not have been the world's greatest singer, but I always looked forward to being onstage with great singers. It made me look good and also made me push myself to the next level in order to stay competitive.

They take responsibility. This is not a popular concept in our current society. The trend is to find other things, circumstances, or people on which to blame your shortcomings or failures. Successful people realize that the buck stops with them and they step up to take the consequences of their actions.

On a related note, successful people have no problem admitting when they are wrong, but they will not go out of their way to tell you that you are. Nothing strains a relationship more than being called out by a friend without something constructive to accompany it. Successful people will find a way to do this in a manner that a) doesn't sting, and b) allows for substantive conclusions and solutions.

There are any number of ways to change your life into one that models success. Now get out there and be successful.
