More about Chetan Bhagat

The prolific writer Chetan Bhagat grew up in West Delhi and used to study in Army Public School. Although he was a good student in school, he could hardly be called extraordinary. He plunged himself into the unpredictable life of a writer although he already had a pretty secure and lucrative career in a bank (not that safe a field anymore).

Exponentially Increasing Fan Base

The fact that his books were continuously being received very well throughout the country resulting in an exponentially increasing fan base made his decision easier. He continued working in a bank even after three of his books went on to become bestsellers and two movies based on them went on the floor for shooting. One psychiatrist told him to stop positioning himself as just a funny writer since his impact on the way young minds across the country thought was tremendous. The conversation left a big impression on him.

Closer to Reality Due To Upbringing

He stayed on with the bank job due to the safety reason, and partly due to middle class values and upbringing. The mental conditioning that one can't just quit MNC bank job also kept him there. The bank job appeared even more pointless to him when he managed to overcome his attachment to money. There were other things as well he wanted to devote himself to such as delivering talks and writing for his blogs.

Chetan Bhagat Acknowledges Luck

The fact that his wife is also leading a professionally successful life also creates added pressure for him. Since both of them were working, even the kids could not get enough time from them. Even if his writing career doesn't stay the way it is, he still has a plan B, though he still doesn't believe life can be lived solely on the basis of plans. He believes luck has played a large part in him becoming a popular writer.

One Book at a Time

Although Chetan Bhagat has more than one idea at one time, he makes sure he works on only one book at certain point so he can give his all to the writing project. 25% of his professional time is taken up by travel, and rest of the time goes to his work though he is not a workaholic sort of a person. The routine gets derailed if Chetan Bhagat has to attend scripting sessions with a director or has to attend some other assignments.

Difficult Balance

At the same time, it must be said it's a tough balance he manages to strike. Chetan Bhagat has limited his number of talks to four per month and he writes one column every fortnight. While working on his books, Chetan Bhagat stops contributing to social networking sites and blog though his fans do not like it.
