Born in 1946, Stephen Paul Coonts is the author of eight bestsellers according to the New York Times. He graduated in 1968, after which he was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy and his flight training was started in Pensacola, Florida. He joined Attack Squadron 196 after completing fleet replacement training for the A-6 Intruder aircraft. He also made two combat cruises in Vietnam war. After the war was over, he served as flight instructor, assistant catapult and arresting gear officer. In 1977 he moved to Colorado after leaving active duty and then he also worked as taxi driver and as police officer. Next he joined the University of Colorado School of Law and received his degree in law in 1979.

Ruling the Bestseller's List

He started his law practice in West Virginia though his frequent movement here and there continued. It was when his firm downsized that he realized he actually wanted to do something else, and that law practice was not something he wanted to do. His first novel was first rejected by 35 publishers, though it was accepted by the Naval Institute Press. The novel ruled the New York Times bestsellers list for 28 weeks. Later, a motion picture based on the same novel was also released in 1991.

Flying Is His Next Passion

Stephen Coonts' eighth novel Cuba was released in 1999 which topped the bestsellers list and collected rave reviews right away. After the family, flying is his second passion so if he is not writing and he is not at home either, you can always find him mid air - flying. His wife is a pilot too and both of them fly together many hours every month in one of their personal four airplanes. So the journey of Stephen Coonts has been basically that of a naval aviator to a frustrated attorney to bestselling author.

Stephen Coonts Reads Everything

As a kid, Stephen Coonts loved everything in the printed form and read anything he could lay his hands on. Nowadays, he has more catholic interests as a reader compared to when he was just a kid. At that time, however, he had no certain plans to be a writer. It was only when he actually sat down and wrote a book that he could convince himself that maybe one day he will be published. It was a difficult period for him, he was also getting a divorce and was getting laid off. He did not become a commercial pilot because the job prospects as a pilot were not that great, as the job scene at that time was not as steady as it is these days.

Rejections and Rejections

He had a list of all the publishers in English and he sent a query letter to all of them, and the only response he got were rejections. He also sent the manuscript to the Naval Institute Press and the people there liked the plot. They agreed to pay him $5000 for the book and he never looked back after that.
