More firms 'turning to managed hosting'

While many sectors are suffering at present as a result of the economic problems being felt across the UK and in many other countries around the world, managed hosting is doing well.

This is the opinion of one expert, who made his comments during a recent computing industry event.

Speaking at the 360IT conference, nonstopIT's Andy Wright suggested that many businesses are turning to dedicated hosting and mid market virtualization in an attempt to keep their costs down.

He noted that using managed hosting can be a way for companies to control their IT expenditure.

Mr Wright stated: "Rather than buying an expensive box, [a cloud solution] doesn't need managing, doesn't need such intensive resource in-house to manage it.

"More and more will go into the cloud I expect and more and more people, as they're slimming down their IT infrastructure and IT support departments, they're going to want to put more in the cloud."

In contrast to the success of dedicated hosting, many other parts of the IT sector are struggling, he went on to note.

He pointed out that permanent IT recruitment in the country is down as a result of the economic difficulties still being experienced.

Some analysts predict that there will be more financial strife before the UK returns to financial health. The coalition government is in the process of implementing policies designed to quickly reduce the size of the deficit and there are fears this could prompt a double-dip recession.

However, also speaking at the 360IT conference, a panel of experts warned that firms should not neglect spending on computing, ComputerWeekly.com reports. They claimed that IT should be central to organisations' innovations strategies.

Among the specialists was David Chan, director of the centre for information leadership at City University. He suggested that people should use the current circumstances to do things in a "completely new and novel way".
