A Sealing is a marriage ceremony unique to the Mormon Church in which a bride and groom are bound together for eternity. A Sealing takes place in a Latter Day Saints temple and involves only the bride and the groom -- there is no wedding procession and very few guests. Some Mormon couples also hold secondary civil ceremonies that all their friends and loved ones may attend. In this case, the duties of a Mormon maid of honor are the same as in any wedding.

Help Plan the Wedding

This is probably the maid of honor's most important function. In a Mormon wedding, in addition to the regular wedding planning the maid of honor must help the bride remember to make an appointment for the couple to talk to their church leaders and get their temple recommends (which show that they're worthy to enter the Temple) and complete their initiatory and endowment ordinances.

Help Plan a Ring Ceremony

If the couple plans to hold a ring ceremony outside the Sealing Room, they may do it immediately after the Sealing in a public room of the temple or as part of the wedding reception. Help the bride remember to ask a church leader to give a short talk on the importance of eternal marriage in the LDS church. Vows are not exchanged in Mormon marriage ceremonies, so they should just put the rings on each other's fingers. As maid of hono,r you may hold the ring before the ceremony, or the bride may decide to use a ring bearer.

Help the Bride Choose her Wedding Dress

For a civil ceremony, a Mormon bride may wear anything she wishes. For a Sealing Ceremony she may wear her wedding dress, if she likes, as long as it has long sleeves, a high neckline, a modest skirt length, no train and no unlined, sheer material. She may wear a jacket under or over her dress to make it appropriate for a temple ceremony. Veils, hats and other headgear are also forbidden in the temple.

Organize a Shower

Do this just as you would for a non-Mormon wedding shower. Set a theme--such as "Pamper the Bride" or "Things for the Kitchen"--invite a lot of people, have games and prizes and serve wedding shower food.
