Moroccan Rugs Combine Colours, Designs And Class
Antique Moroccan rugs add to the style and ambience of a home in a classy way
. If you possess a Moroccan rug or two, not only is it a symbol of your prosperity, but it also shows that you have good taste. I have always had a fetish for rugs and carpets and I totally indulge myself at Doris Leslie Blau, being a resident of the Big Apple.
There is something about the comfort of a rug at home. The rich colours and beautiful designs of a Moroccan rug call out to you and ensure that you are not depressed or blue. In fact, getting a colourful Moroccan rug is as good as getting some good old colour therapy. If youre around them, then trust me, your mood is bound to be chirpy, always!
Origins
The Berbers, the indigenous natives of the Northern regions of Africa first evolved the art of rug weaving. They inhabited what is modern Morocco today for centuries and their descendants continue to do so. They are the original inhabitants of the region and resided there centuries before the first of the Arab invasions took place.
Today, this rich tradition and art form is still carried on in the Middle and High Atlas mountains by the Berber women. In fact, this is one of their major means of earning a living. There are many, many kinds of Moroccan rugs, but my personal rugs are the flat woven ones, which are knotted.
The reason Im partial to these rugs is that they have a liberal use of bold colours and contrasts. The patterns scream out to you and are eye catchers. The motifs are generally geometric and are arranged in so many different variations that it is quite staggering. They scream out Modern, but one can always find a touch of rich traditions in them.
What To Expect
Every tribe has its own special motif or design, to mark ceremonial days and other occasions. Moroccan Berber women, who are generally the carpet weavers, draw on their day to day life for inspiration. This is, of course, combined with a healthy dose of her imagination. The result? Unique rugs which represent day to day life of the Berber women and an artisans artistic prowess and skill.
What is most striking about Moroccan rugs is the sheer use of bold and bright colour in them. For centuries, North Africas colours have been celebrated by well known western artists like Delacroix and Klee. And now, the simple, yet striking geometric patterns and motifs of these rugs are being widely used to decorate modern apartments and houses. Being a regular at Doris Leslie Blau, I can safely say that they have a very fine collection indeed; of course, you always have the option to custom-design your rugs if nothing suits your tastes!
