The majority of women in business and technology jobs are good at networking, according to a new survey.
Research by Women Unlimited found that as many as 85 per cent of women have managed to drum up business through networking, with one in five making more than 10,000 in a year through sales at a meet and greet, Management Today reported.
This goes strongly against an article written by Antonia Senior for the Times last March, which claimed that women are not natural networkers.
"We might be more capable in the workplace, but we are more likely than our male peers to hide our talents and our selves behind the water cooler at the company do," she said, claiming that a woman's "failure to schmooze" is holding them back.
What is more, Ms Senior put this as the reason why there are only ten per cent of FTSE 100 board members that are women.
The article caused networking company Women Unlimited to compile the views of its website visitors and social networking followers to give their opinion on the issue and share their experience of networking in a male-dominated industry.
It found that more than one in five women go to a networking event more than five times a month and as many as 75 per cent go to an event at least twice a month, making use of the platform as a place to meet likeminded people and get ahead in their industry.
Results also revealed that 83 per cent of those surveyed went to events not for the champagne and canapes, but rather to get referrals, while 80 per cent went to learn from others.
Networking can be seen as more important than ever as companies adopt social networking into their business strategy and aim to generate business through alternative means as the country comes out of recession.
For graduates who are establishing their career in a competitive industry, they are often advised to utilise networking events and social media to get ahead, meet the right people and add something to their CV.
Lisette Howlett, spokesperson for Hirescores.com, advised graduates to use Twitter and Facebook to "get in front of the right people at target companies".
However, one networking guru has advised people against bad networking.
Dr Ivan Misner, the US founder of Business Network International told the Telegraph that too many people are using social media to bombard firms with their contacts and forcing them to do business.
"There's still a lot of misunderstanding with networking. Most people think that it's walking around, handing out cards," he said.
"Networking is more about farming than it is about hunting. It's about cultivating business relationships."
Women can find networking events through organisations that are catered specifically for them where they can "cultivate" relationships with other women in their field.
