Motability is a scheme that helps disabled people to have a car

, a scooter or a powered wheelchair. In other words, it helps them find transportation. Up until 1970, the government was responsible for finding a car for disabled people, but the programme included only those that had driving skills.

In 1976 the government decided to give a certain amount to all disabled people to help them with transportation, rather than giving them a car that might not be functional for them. However, the amount was not enough to cover the needs of a car leading to the introduction of the Motability Scheme.

The programme allows the customers to choose a new car and use for three to five years. After this period of time the customer returns the car and can choose another new car if he needs to. Customers pay for the car by giving the fund they received from the government. If the customer wishes to have a specific car model or needs to make adoptions in the existing car that are not covered, he may have to pay additional costs that are not refundable.

However, the company can make standard adjustments to the cars used without asking for an extra amount of money. Most of the times, customers receive a new car that has the required adjustments and only have to pay the transportation allowance they have received from the government. Contracts last from three to five years. At the end of the contract the customer can choose a new car or buy the one he used or be removed from the programme.

Many people have used motability cars for some years to go to their work, or to their universities or simply to carry their family. Most of them choose a new car and continue the programme, some manage to purchase the car and others remove themselves from the programme until they need a car again. Parents with disabled children can also take part in the programme on behalf of their child.

Cars that are given are new and they are returned after three years. The company takes care of the cars throughout this whole period and the customers are required to return them in a good condition as well. Insurance, tyres and possible damages are covered from the scheme. Moreover, the cars are rarely used up to the number of miles allowed and most of the times they have a limited usage.

All these make motability cars very popular in the used car market. Most people looking for used cars think that one of these cars is a very good choice as their previous use is monitored by the company. Indeed the cars are in a very good condition that enables them to be considered good as new. They are therefore preferred by many people that are looking to buy a used car that is in good condition and also know that the amount that they are going to pay can help with the expenses the company has.
