Motivation In The Workplace - Building Community
A community atmosphere helps foster motivation in the workplace
. Studies on motivation and work are numerous and conducted widely all over the world. Regardless of the studies performed, a recurring conclusion emerges. No matter the stage of life studied, feeling respected as a person by peers and superiors is the most important motivational factor for employees. To achieve an atmosphere of mutual respect as human beings, co-workers must have a sense of community, of joint goals and understandings. The feeling of community is not limited to co-workers on the same hierarchical level. Rather, it should encompass the entire organization.
Motivation in the workplace greatly increases when those involved feel a part of a common goal. It is this ideal that is the basis for many team-building retreats and activities organized outside of the normal work environment. These activities seek to mesh individuals and give them common goals toward which they all work as a team. Additionally, getting to know co-workers on a personal level gives each member of the "team" a broader view of the people with whom they work. They gain a better understanding of what drives their co-workers and what holds them back. These activities seek to teach co-workers how to respectfully disagree, honor differing opinions and backgrounds, as well as working together on joint tasks.
Organizational culture can have lasting effects on motivation in the workplace. An organization whose culture fosters acceptance, tolerance, open communication, and core values agreeable to the whole will find far fewer struggles to maintain motivation among employees. Allowing employees to help build this culture and subsequent community gives them a sense of investing in its success. Expensive weekend "team-building" retreats may not offer as much as simply gathering employees in small groups to brainstorm ideas. Feedback and open communication are some of the best tools for developing a productive, highly motivated community atmosphere.
Long gone are the days when motivation in the workplace was governed by pay raises, quotas, or bonuses. While these motivating factors have their usefulness, creating common goals and community values offers a more lasting impression. A work community that is committed to common interests and joint goals can achieve higher standards than a workforce motivated purely by money and status. Employees who are satisfied that their peers and supervisors respect them as a person and value their contributions are more likely to stay longer, be more productive, and provide greater value to the organization.
