Once upon a time off-road bikes didn't exist so how did these top dirt bike manufacturers

come about and why? The history of dirt biking is elementary: it got started in England in the 1930 when students at London University began racing their motorcycles around in the woods. Suddenly, dirt bikes were popular and companies began to emerge from the woodwork to fill the needs of consumers, the largest one being BSA. In the 70s, Japanese companies started to compete with European ones and even winning dirt biking competitions.

The modern incarnation of this fierce competition has yielded a truly diverse field of quality bikes that are custom made for any particular purpose you desire. I often hear people ask "Which dirt bike manufacturer or brand should I choose?" or "Which one is best?". To answer this question, pretty much all dirt bike companies are roughly on the same level. The leading companies are involved in such fierce competition that they monitor each other's products and adapt the changes to their own. If you sit down on someone else's bike you will notice subtle differences because the bikes feel different but for the most part you won't notice much of a difference in performance. The brand matters so little these days so just go with your color of choice. But for those of you that don't accept that recommendation I'll share a couple of things with you below.

KTM are a top European brand originating from Austria. You will find many champions of dirt bike races sporting one of these bad boys. They haven't managed to catch up to the Japanese producers when it comes to motocross and supercross but that may be because their focus is not in that area. Their bikes cost a little more than the Japanese bikes and are made of slightly better quality components. There are also excellent accessories you can buy that will make your dirt bike a monsters.

This company is of Swedish original and produces bikes for enduro events specifically. They are not prevalent in the Southern half of the world. Another high quality dirt bike.

Suzuki and other similar companies have been owning the supercross competitions for a long time. As of today there is very little difference between these dirt bikes so you can just pull one out of a hat. Their enduro performance is nothing to scoff at either.

The lesser well known little Spanish company, Gasgas have only been around since 1984 but are producing a range of mostly trial and enduro bikes. These bikes can basically only be seen in European countries. They don't carry the same amount of prestige as the above brands but are a great option for most riders.
