The topic of using black boxes in vehicles has been talked about for some time. Young Marmalade a specialist in young driver vehicle sales has found a practical way to use the devices. The company has found a way to utilse the technology as a way to reduce young driver policy costs. And to be honest having looked at the plans we have to applaud their entrepreneurship.

Yesterday the Sun newspaper reported that a young driver who purchased a vehicle for around 600 was quoted nearly 100,000 for a policy. Whilst many people will laugh at this amount it is actually a very real indicator at a huge problem for the UK.

So as Young Marmalade have a huge experience in working with this section of motorists they have put this knowledge to good use using the new technology. So what does this look like

The Technology

Well everyone knows what a black box is, they have been around in aircraft for many years and provide a valuable resource if problems occur. So how will this work in an everyday vehicle, well the plan is to have it record many of the vehicles output reports. Things like speed, driving style and braking. It is thought that by monitoring certain variables from within the vehicle it is easy to work out how good or bad the driver is.

Think of the black box as a sort of big brother passenger, or always having your driving instructor in the cab with you. The best thing is this innovation will reward good drivers and punish poor motorists. This will happen by the driver reports that are produced, if they are bad then the report can be sent to the parents of the driver. If the reports are good this will reduce your policy premium.

Whilst this is good for sensible drivers it does penalize you more than a letter home if your driving is poor. As poor driving style vastly increases the chances of an accident then if the reports are less than favourable you can expect your premium to increase quite significantly or result in the loss of a policy completely.

The Results

Well we think that this is a really great idea and would like to congratulate Young Marmalade on their use of innovation to help and try and make young drivers improve on the roads. We hope that this will spur young drivers to take up the black box challenge and whilst improving their driving reduce their policy cost.

It is obviously yet to be seen what the take up of this product will be but if companies start to offer more and more young people policies for 100,000 then they may be forced to take this road. As the reporting from this device is so in-depth we think it will allow drivers to build up a more comprehensive driving C.V. which shows more than a no claims certificate.

When you think about it the no claims certificate is a great way to reward a year of no claims but it does not show the whole picture. It shows you got through a year without claiming on your policy it does not show how you got there. The black box fills this void, and any future policy provider can see you drive safely all the time.
