Motorcyclists Injured In California Big Rig Accident
Two California motorcyclists sustained injuries in a collision with an 18-wheeler last week.
Rocklin-resident David Milldrum and Roseville-resident Roxanna Bradford were riding the motorcycle, when it collided with a truck on interstate 80. Both Milldrum and Bradford had to be airlifted to the hospital, and are reported to be in good condition now. California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident, and no charges have been filed against the truck driver. According to the California Highway Patrol, the highway was busy with thousands of motorcyclists on their way to Reno for the Street Vibrations Motorcycle Festival.
It is extremely fortunate that Milldrum and Bradford were able to escape the accident without any serious injuries. Collisions involving large commercial trucks and smaller vehicles can be devastating ones, with severe injuries and loss of lives. However, when these collisions involve a motorcycle, the consequences are often fatal. Motorcyclists rely on precarious balance, and any impact with a stationary or moving object can throw a motorcyclist several feet away. Survivors may be left with catastrophic injuries like brain injuries and spinal cord fractures. In fact, California catastrophic injury lawyers often come across motorcycle accident victims, who have sustained serious life-altering injuries in these crashes.
Victims of motorcycle accidents may also be eligible for compensatory benefits that include compensation for medical expenses incurred by the motorcyclist. The kind of severe injuries that result from a motorcycle accident can require long term hospitalization, specialized surgeries, and physical therapy. Compensation can cover all these costs, as well as the cost of doctor fees, medication expenses, and x-ray and diagnostic charges. A motorcyclist who has been seriously injured may require long term nursing and 24-hour care. When the victim returns home from the hospital, he may require enhancements to be made to his home, to facilitate mobility and access. He may be compensated for these costs. Injured motorcyclists may also be compensated for loss of income from lost hours at work. In case the motorcycle injury is so serious that the victim cannot return to his former employment, he may be eligible for compensation for the earnings that he stands to lose in the future.
As California motorcycle accident lawyers often see, very often these collisions are the result of the negligence of the motorist. Motorists who are distracted or not paying attention to the road may fail to notice a motorcyclist in time to avoid an accident. This kind of negligence can have serious consequences for the motorcyclist.
Besides motorist negligence, dangerous road conditions can also contribute to motorcyclist crashes. For instance, roads with raised asphalt can cause a motorcyclist to lose control over his vehicle with deadly consequences. A lack of adequate barriers can also increase a motorcyclist's risk of an accident. Any road obstruction like foliage can restrict a motorcyclist's field of vision causing an accident. Lack of adequate signage warning motorcyclists of dangerous conditions ahead can also contribute to a carsh. Poorly illuminated streets can create dangerous conditions for a motorcyclist.
