Motorhome Types - American Motorhome (aka Recreational Vehicle, Rv)
Motorhomes come in all shapes and sizes, delivered to the marketplace by many manufacturers in many countries
. These vehicles however are generally categorised as either a panel van (vehicles that use the original body of the van) or a coach built (using a purpose built habitation area, mounted on a suitable chassis).
The RV motorhome is a sight rarely seen in Europe but very common on the interstate highways of the US and Canada. These vehicles are considerably larger than their mainly European designed alternate style motorhomes and very much designed with the wide open spaces available in the US for both driving and on campsites. The look of the RV is almost bus like, with a multitude of features internally. Indeed the luxuriously decorated RV is a sight to behold on the road or in your camp site.
When calculated on price per area of living space, the American Motorhome often represents incredible value for money. Your, admittedly considerably large, investment would typically secure you a large number of robust external lockers, a built in generator with internal dashboard control switch, a permanent double bed, a bath, multiple flat screen TV units, a powerful turbo diesel engine with automatic transmission and many more extras.
These substantial vehicles have a considerable following in their native continent, but whether they are suited to Europe is a moot point. Firstly the road size in many Euro countries is just not big enough to accommadate and secondly the camp sites are not well enough equipped to make your stay a pleasant one.
There are many advantages of the RV style motorhome, including being exceptionally good value for money when you consider the floor space they occupy. Take into account the slide out feature that most have, whereby the main compartment slides out to one or even both sides, which can almost double the size of the vehicles on the road footprint. The sheer size of the RV makes it ideal for large numbers, typically they can sleep about 8 and can have up to three distinct sleeping areas.
On the negative side, RV's can be costly and difficult to maintain. There are very few specialist maintainance experts for these type vehicles in the UK. Parts can be expensive as they are typically imported from the US. Most UK camp sites are unable to take RV's as they are too large to manouvre about on the site. Fuel costs are high and efficiency is poor. Parking is obviously a nightmare and considerably limits your use.
In summary, the RV is a great vehicle in it's native continent - America. But in Europe and UK, it's use is limited.
