Mount Board

Mount-board is used for dry mounting which is one of the best

, if not the only, way of presenting artworks with the highest level of protection and layout. Mount boards are in various thicknesses and can be as strong as 2500 microns. Dry mounting with Mount-boards has always been part of the essential finishing accessories for Graphic Designers, Architects, photographers and even artists or illustrators. The mount-boards are used, among others things, for professional and impressive final presentation of works be-it graphic designs, illustrations, photographs and even for sales presentations as used by marketing professionals.

At one time, using mount-boards by artists was a straightforward process because all they had to do was place the artwork or illustration on the mount-board with extra spaces around the piece. While photographers use the window mounting method! The window mounting method is a process of mounting pictures in sandwiched boards. Meaning two mount-boards are cut to size, with extra spaces around the photograph. The photograph is placed on one of the mount-boards, while a window is cut into the other mount-board to reveal the picture when placed on top of the photograph. This window mounting method eventually became the norm for mounting any artwork project because of its professional and prcised presentation style, albeit not easy or cheap. In fact, the process got so technical that it required trained professional framers to do it in ways that will properly showcase the creative jobs appropriately.

Good quality mounting boards are made of cotton fibres, acid-free and buffered with calcium carbonate for the best preservation, which is why they are use for high quality artworks that are meant to withstand the test of time. Mounting boards generally come in A1 size, which is then cut, to size depending on the use. Many artists and designers prefer this, so that they can have the flexibility of how they want to cut the board.

There are various techniques used in the process of mounting artworks or photos. The Original technique involved laying the mounting board is laid out on the tabletop. The artwork/photo is then positioned on top of the mounting board, preferably at the centre. An acid-free tape is attached to the artwork/photo at the right, left, top and bottom margins. The second technique is the process of using acid-free Corner self-adhesives. Inserting the self-adhesive in all corners of the artwork/photo! The artwork/photo, with self-adhesives at the back, is then attached to the mounting board. The use of Corner self-adhesive is the technique most preferred by many, if not all, of the museums across the world.

The Dry Mounting technique is the process of attaching artwork/photo permanently to the mount boards. With the mounting board on the tabletop, the dry-mounting adhesive is applied on both the mounting board and the artwork/photo. As appropriate pressure is applied to the mounting board, high temperature is also introduced so that the adhesive can heat-up to create a bond between the artwork and the mounting board. Wet Mounting is basically the opposite of the dry mounting. This technique is employed, when the application of heat is not practical.

Wet glue or an adhesive paste is applied instead to the mounting board. The artwork/photo is then placed immediately on the mounting board. Pressure is applied by using a large piece of glass over the mounting board. A period of between 8 to 24 hours is required for the mounting board to be completely dry. Another alternative to wet mounting is Spray Adhesive, which is applied to the artwork/photo and then placed carefully on a designated position on the mounting board. Smoothing out from the centre ensures that the artwork/photo is evenly position on the mounting board.
