In this piece, we'll talk to you about drivers, what they are, why they are important, and why it is important to keep them up to date. Then, we'll walk you through how to fix your mouse driver error.
Mouse Drivers 101
Mouse drivers are how Windows and your mouse talk to each other, they act as the translator between Windows and your mouse. When Windows goes through a lot of updates or is upgraded, the core programing language of Windows changes. This means that Windows is no longer speaking the same language as the mouse drivers, making it impossible for Windows and your mouse to talk to each other.
This makes your mouse start to malfunction in the Windows environment. The fix for this is simply to download and install the latest mouse drivers from the manufacturer of your mouse.
Downloading the
Latest Mouse Drivers1. The first step in downloading the latest mouse drivers is figuring out the manufacturer of your mouse. Flip your mouse over--there should be a panel with some print on the bottom. This will have the manufacturer and other information on it. (Examples: Logitech, Microsoft, and Razer)
2. Do a web search for the manufacturer's web site.
3. Go to the manufacturer's web site.
4. On the web site you should find a support section. Choose this section. You may need to choose product support to go further.
5. The Logitech site has an auto detector. This will automatically detect your mouse for you. You may have to install the software for auto-detect first. Firefox asked me for permission to install when I checked the site.
6. Once you find your mouse on the manufacturer's web site you will want to find where they keep the drivers for the mouse, and download them. Make a note where you save the files to.
7. Once you download the drivers, it is time to update the mouse drivers.
8. Go to your Start Menu
9. Go to your Search Bar
10. Type in Device Manager
11. Click Continue on the window that pops up
12. Click the + next to Mice and other pointing devices
13. Click on the problem mouse.
14. Double click on the mouse. This will open up a new window
15. Click the "Driver" tab at the top of the window
16. Click the Update Driver button
17. From here you can browse the folder where you saved the mouse software, and install it from that location
