Mouth Cysts On Palate

At least 85 percent of all infants are born with small

, round, smooth, yellow-white swellings on their gums or palates. Those on the gums are usually 2 to 3 millimeters in size and are called Bonn's pearls; those on the palate are twice as large and are called Epstein's pearls. When viewed under a microscope, both types of "pearls" consist of the same material that produces milia around the nose and chin ), and it isn't surprising that all three of these conditions disappear at about the same timeby one to three months of age. Those who imagine that only teeth belong on the gums may mistake Bonn's pearls for teeth, but if you feel the bumps carefully, you'll note that they aren't as hard or sharp as teeth. Epstein's pearls can be mistaken for thrush, a common fungus infection of the mouth, but the white deposit of thrush is plastered against the mouth and can be removed. Epstein's pearls cannot.

WHITE PATCHES IN MOUTH

Milk remaining in the mouth will curdle and stick to the baby's cheeks or tongue as a gray-white patch. It can be scraped off with ease, leaving behind a completely normal surface. If you're certain that the patch represents milk deposits, there's no need to do anything about it. If you want to be sure the patch is not thrush, try to scrape it off. The chalky-white plaque of thrush is firmly stuck against the mouth, and when you finally manage to get some of it off, you'll see that the surface behind it is swollen and red, and bleeds easily. Thrush is a true infection and produces an inflamed response; milk deposits are just interior decorating.

SUCKING BLISTERS

People who work with their hands get blisters on their hands, and babies who work with their lips get blisters on their lips. Not all babies get them, but those who do, develop a single blister in the center of the upper lip. The blister may peel and re-form over and over again. Sucking blisters are a very visible sign that the baby is an avid sucker (not that a nursing mother needs to be reminded). They're occasionally mistaken for the blister of herpes. Since babies with herpes have many blisters not confined to the upper lip, and aren't likely to be avid suckers, this worry should be easily retired.

PROTRUDING TONGUE

Many babies allow their mouths to open and their tongues to protrude, particularly when they're relaxed. Unless the baby's mouth is unusually small, or her tongue unusually big, a protruding tongue shouldn't cause concern. If you need to be certain, simply push the baby's tongue into her mouth and hold her lips closed. If the tongue fits, let the baby wear it. The tongue of a baby with Down's syndrome sticks out of her mouth, but it can easily be distinguished from the tongue of a normal infant by its rhythmical in-and-out protrusion and retraction. Furthermore, the tongue usually doesn't fit very well in the baby's mouth. Most of the tongue-related worries I hear are really Down's syndrome worries. Your pediatrician will have no difficulty recognizing Down's syndrome and will be able to dispel such concerns quickly
