Movie Review: Fashion - Madhur Bhandarkar Gets Some Refinement

One of the greatest open secrets of Hindi cinema is the fact that Madhur Bhandarkar helps to make the same film over and over

. All he is doing is take the same character-and underdog it in a ugly world-and just affect the settings. The only twist in the tale will be the microcosm which he draws parallel with all the problems around the globe. So that it could be a Page 3 party (Page 3), a traffic signal (Traffic Signal), a political party (Satta), the business enterprise (Corporate) or even a dance bar (Chandani Bar), you can not mistake a Madhur Bhandarkar film. On this occasion Bhandarkar covers our prime life in the fashion world.

Fashion Story Synopsis

Meghna Mathur (Priyanka Chopra) is as small town as they come. This Chandigarh lass lands up in Mumbai to become a model... no correction, it's supermodel. There is no real obstacle in her own path as the current 'show stopper' Shonali may be the cynosure with the town but her obsession with drugs and booze in conjunction with her wayward lifestyle have already started her downfall. Predictably Meghna climbs the ladder to success although not before going through her share of struggle where she's got to execute a lingerie ad, schmooze in parties for the money amongst other items.

The ad gets her thrown out from her family friend's house and lands her at Manav's, her love interest. However the higher Meghna goes the lower she falls. Her attitude transforms into arrogance and takes her far from everything dear to her. Her clandestine affair along with her much-married boss gets her pregnant.

Meghna eventually ends up becoming just the type of person she hates. Struggling to see herself in the mirror she runs back to her family. Away from the glitter she actually is still depressed and it is only her father's changed belief in their which gives her the boldness to start once again. Once back Meghna saves her soul by taking it upon herself to save Shonali, who's now homeless. Fate gets her returning to the most notable however, not before testing her limits.

Critics Opinion on Fashion

You can safely state that the ghost of 'Chandni Bar', Bhadarkar's breakthrough film, can finally be laid to rest. 'Fashion' might have the regular ingredients of the director's formula however it is a better film than his previous few works.

Sure the in-house digs really are a plenty and everybody is caricatured, Kangana Ranaut's character mirrors Geetanjali Nagpal's and it's surprisingly predictable at times however the film is well mounted.

One complaint is the screenplay could have been far better. For instance there is no real reason behind Meghna to initially loathe Shonali and her transformation in to a Naomi Campbell like diva isn't really justified. The reason for models to have a certain 'lifestyle' isn't actually scratched further.

Bhandarkar doesn't explore stress or ruthless from the glamour world like a basis for breakdown. Rather he's happy keeping it as being simple as almost all the time. Oh, the things which could have been done...

Fashion: Priyanka Chopra dominates

As far as the performances go this is a Priyanka Chopra film entirely. She is ably based on Samir Soni, Mugdha Godse and Arbaaz Khan. Kangana Ranaut shines since the tormented beauty though she could work with her diction a tad bit more. Kitu Gidwani as the high priestess of modelling world is pure elegance.

'Fashion' sees Madhur Bhandarkar finally moving from his staple digs-a-dozen type of treatment to some more refined approach.
